About Us

The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) is an internationally recognized non-profit agency offering groundbreaking music therapy programs to restore, maintain and improve patients’ physical, emotional and neurological function through the methodical use of music.

The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) was founded in 1995 by Dr. Concetta Tomaino and Dr. Oliver Sacks to bridge the gap between neuroscientists and clinical music therapists, advancing knowledge of music’s role in brain function and healing.

Through the scientific exploration of music and the brain, IMNF seeks to establish new knowledge, and develop music interventions that assist the "awakening and healing" of individuals with a wide range of neurological conditions, including strokes, trauma, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson diseases, and developmental disorders.

The IMNF offers leading-edge education and training programs for music therapists, healthcare professionals, musicians, arts practitioners, and family caregivers. Its Music Has Power® Training programs include the 'Best Practices from Music Therapy for Using Music in Senior Wellness and Healthcare,’ a comprehensive Online/On Demand course leading to Senior Care Music Specialist Certification (NCTRC/NAB/CBMT accredited), and Music &Memory® Certification Training.

A longtime leader in its field, the IMNF serves as a hands-on consultant to healthcare institutions around music therapy and Arts and Health programming, and collaborates with music technology companies to bring music-based interventions to people with dementia and other neurological challenges, and to everyone who can benefit–meaning everyone!
